Signs Your Mighty Mule Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

- The gate sags at the hinge side when it opens. The hinge welds or the hinge post itself has started to give, usually after years of wind load pushing the gate against the opening. The opener pushes, the sag fights it, and the motor burns out faster than it should.
- The opener arm pulls loose from the gate or post. The bracket bolts have wallowed out the mounting holes or the bracket itself is bending. If you see daylight between the bracket and the post, the mount has failed and the opener is working against it.
- A crack runs through the post-mount plate or the gate rail weld. This is the classic Mighty Mule failure, especially on the driver’s side post where the opener arm connects. Texas heat expanding the steel and rain cooling it down creates micro-cracks that eventually open up into a visible split.
- The gate closes past the stop or bounces at the end of travel. The fabricated gate stops or the welded stop plate has broken off, letting the gate overtravel and slamming the opener’s internal limit.
- The opener runs but the gate only moves a few inches before stalling. Usually a bent arm bracket or a torn weld that’s binding the pivot. The motor’s fighting a mechanical wedge, and continuing to run it will cook the control board.
